It is with heavy hearts that Thunder Road joins the NASCAR and motorsports communities in saying goodbye to Steve Byrnes, who passed away at age 56 on April 21, 2015.
Steven Patrick Byrnes was born April 14, 1959, in Chicago. He graduated with a degree in Radio, Television, and Film from the University of Maryland in 1981, and enjoyed a 30 year career in broadcasting. He joined the NASCAR on FOX programming as a reporter, show host, and pit road reporter when FOX began its NASCAR partnership in 2001. Byrnes was a fixture on pit road until 2014.
The brilliant career Byrnes enjoyed for so many years was not nearly as important an accomplishment as his success in the role of a friend, father, and husband. While he touched millions with his broadcasting, as shown by the massive outpouring of public support for him as he battled cancer, he made an even greater impact in the lives of his family.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Karen Byrnes; his son Bryson, 12; his parents Jerry and Claire Byrnes of Charlotte, N.C.; his sister Betsy Byrnes of Charlotte; his brother Dan Byrnes and wife Tammy of Charlotte; nephews Tyler, 21, and Dylan Byrnes, 17; and his niece Samantha Byrnes, 13, of Charlotte. Our prayers and thoughts are with them.
He will be loved and missed by the NASCAR community. It is with a fond and deeply sad farewell that we say goodbye to Steve Byrnes, who will no doubt be watching from above the people and sport to which he gave his love and dedication.
